The representative unions in Pakistan’s textile and garment sector have joined forced to form the Pakistan Textile Garments Leather Workers Federation (PTGLWF) with a focus on wages, contractual employment, forced expulsion, the rights to form unions and judicial processes.

They shared their views on the various aspects of working of trade unions in Pakistan and the overall situation of workers’ rights in the country, according to Pakistan’s National Courier. They informed the media that the name of office bearers of the federation will be finalised and announced during a general body meeting to be held soon.
The workers’ leaders said the textile and garment sectors are the largest sectors of Pakistan’s economy with the largest number of employees and workers, “but unfortunately the exploited sector of the country as well”.
They added that almost 40% of all industrial workers in Pakistan are linked with textile industry whereas their contribution to overall exports is 62%.
