A new photo-luminescent or glow-in-the-dark leather has been developed that combines a high quality finish with sustainability benefits including reduced electricity consumption.

An innovation from UK-based Evolution Leather, GloTech Leather retains the characteristics of leather such as durability, flexibility and breathability, the company says. Yet it also glows in the dark after a short charge from either a natural or artificial light source.

During daylight hours or when exposed to artificial light, the leather will continue to store energy. When it is removed from the light source it will begin to glow immediately. A short charging time will allow the leather to glow for four hours.

“With the glowing effect lasting for up to 40 years, it is an excellent fit for a durable material like leather and is built to last,” says Evrim Kadioglu, director at Evolution Leather Consulting. “Finding the perfectly balanced chemical formula for the photo-luminescent pigment was the key to our success.”

The leather colour can have several different variations from a range of white to black where the material still has the glowing effect – and it can be applied to a range of leather verticals such as fashion, footwear, automotive, accessories, interior design and home products.

Evolution Leather will be exhibiting at next month’s Lineapelle 2018 show in Milan alongside its partner tannery Cevahir Deri.
