US fabric maker Polartec has launched what it claims is a “best-in-class fill insulation” for outdoor clothing, adding to its stable of temperature-regulating performance fabrics.

Made from a specially developed hollow fibre construction of 80% recycled polyester fibres, the insulation has been designed for the production of clothing for particularly cold temperatures.

Polartec Power Fill has a matrix that forms thousands of small air pockets that continuously store body heat and act as a heat-insulating layer. The hollow fibres are bonded together in a controlled fusion process ensuring longevity and easier processing. In addition, no external scrims or other fibre fixations are required.

The insulation is also hydrophobic, so it absorbs no moisture, dries quickly and scores points with an excellent warmth-to-weight ratio. It is available in 60, 80, 100 and 135gm variants.

“With Polartec Alpha [the company’s temperature regulating products] we have opened a new category of active thermal insulation,” says Gary Smith, CEO of Polartec. “With Polartec Power Fill, we are adding a textile solution to the coldest weather conditions.”

Outdoor specialist Millet has utilised the new insulation in its Elevation Airloft Jacket and the Lady Belay K Hoodie.
