UK fashion retailer River Island has recalled five womenswear garments due to concerns the items contain traces of certain chemicals in excess of legally permitted levels within the EU.
In a notice published to its website, River Island has instructed customers to stop wearing and using the products immediately and to keep the items of clothing away from children.
It told shoppers to return the whole product either in-store or via post for a full refund inclusive of postage and noted the affected products can be identified by the product identification numbers printed on the garments wash care label.
The items in question include a check pattern dress with faux pearl button (Product No 723969) and a check pattern sleeveless blouse with faux pearl button (Product No 723975). Both items were sold through River Island’s online and high street retail outlets from July 2018.
Also on the recall list are a further three items that River Island noted in a separate release posted to the Chartered Trading Standards Institute contain lead “in excess of legal safety levels and presents a serious risk to the health of anyone wearing or handling the products.”
Among these items is a premium embellished tassel playsuit (Product No 714210) which was sold both in-store and online from February 2018 and a sequin embellished cami top (Product No 720271), sold in-store and online from June 2018.

“We bought these products from suppliers who provided testing certificates indicating chemical content within the legal limits,” the retailer said on its website. “We are working with these suppliers to investigate how this happened and to make sure it does not happen again.”
