The proposed Standard draft introduces a streamlined structure and approach to simplify net-zero target setting across sectors and regions, while keeping alignment with global climate goals.

SBTi CEO David Kennedy said: “Taking science-based action, both reduces emissions and manages transition risks, maintaining competitiveness and offering growth opportunities in a carbon-constrained world.

“By contributing to our public consultation stakeholders can help shape the future of corporate climate action and ensure the Standard helps companies to turn ambition into action, and action into impact.”

Core components of the proposed revision

  • The revised standard outlines requirements for companies to align their short-term operational measures with longer-term climate objectives, and to publish transition plans detailing their approach towards net-zero emissions.
  • Each scope (scope 1, scope 2) and value chain emissions have specific requirements, with separate target-setting to address different decarbonisation challenges and opportunities.
  • Companies can also select from a variety of science-based options that reflect their unique circumstances, allowing them to focus efforts on emissions sources where they can achieve change.
  • The updated draft sets clear expectations on how progress against targets should be measured and disclosed, driving continuous improvement and accountability to help companies remain aligned with their net-zero ambition.

Goals of the SBTi draft standard

The draft Standard seeks to speed up corporate decarbonisation by making climate action based on scientific targets more practical for companies to adopt and implement.

It aims to enable a broader range of businesses to set targets and track measurable outcomes, while also offering a framework that takes into account the differing operational contexts across sectors and regions.

The updated approach provides a “focused and flexible framework” for addressing both operational emissions and those within value chains.

It outlines an end-to-end process that encourages companies to pursue ambitious goals and acknowledges progress achieved at the close of target cycles.

In addition, the draft introduces a recognition system designed to motivate companies to take early, voluntary steps in managing their ongoing emissions.

SBTi chief technical officer Alberto Carrillo Pineda added: “With the publication of this updated draft, we are taking a further step forward in making science-based climate action more inclusive, actionable, and adaptable for businesses everywhere.

“Already reflecting the feedback of hundreds of businesses and experts gathered in the first consultation, further input on this draft is crucial to ensuring that the finalised Corporate Net-Zero Standard is practical, credible and robust—helping businesses worldwide accelerate the net-zero transition.”
