A ski suit made from recycled fishing nets by Spanish outdoor clothing and sportswear firm Ternua Group has won a top award at ISPO, one of the world’s largest trade fairs for sporting goods and sportswear.

43 judges from 12 countries on three continents chose Ternua’s Blackcomb mountain ski suit as the best intermediate layer product in the Snow Sports category at this week’s ISPO Munich trade show, where the brand is presenting its autumn-winter 2019-2020 collection.

The award marks the third time the firm has received the ISPO Gold award with this year seeing the judges look at design, innovation, functionality, and sustainability.

The Blackcomb suit, which can be recycled at end of use, is made with Dryshell Active Flex, a new technology developed by Ternua that is a blend of 65% recycled nylon from disused fishing nets from Cantabria, Spain, and 35% elastane.

“This award reaffirms that we’re moving in a good direction,” says Ternua Group innovation director, Eduardo Uribesalgo.

“For us, doing things right is important, but more than anything, we’re concerned with doing them in the right way. We want to make garments that protect people and are technical, carefully designed and have well thought out details, but we also want to protect the planet by using source materials that are recycled and recyclable and PFC free waterproofing treatments.”
