About 500 workers in Spain’s clothing industry who lost their jobs during the recession will benefit from a EUR2.8m (US$3.6m) European Union-funded assistance programme.

If the successful application for EUR1.8m of funds from the EU Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) is ratified by the European Parliament, 500 of the worst-affected workers in the Galicia region will benefit from help to find another job.

The package includes careers guidance, training, mobility and training vouchers, and support for a better work/life balance, at a total cost of EUR2.8m.

The European Commission said some 32,700 jobs had been lost in Galicia between 2007 and 2009, including 4,414 textiles jobs.

The EGF application relates to 703 redundancies in 82 small and medium-sized businesses in the region.

“The redundant workers are finding it hard to reach new opportunities,” said László Andor, EU Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion.

“I am confident that the EGF training and support will help cushion the transition to a new job.”
