Sri Lankan manufacturing giant Star Garment Group has been awarded carbon neutral status across its entire operations.

The quantification was externally validated using ISO 14064 certification by the Sustainable Future Group (SFG), Sri Lanka’s verification and certification body accredited by the International Accreditation Forum. The certification process involved all 14 of Star’s facilities and its central operations.

The company, which supplies leading brands including Ralph Lauren, DKNY, Nautica and Jockey, targeted becoming a 100% carbon neutral manufacturer by 2022. The Carbon Consulting Company (CCC) was commissioned to assess Star’s operational impact with GHG assessments conducted across its facilities, and to develop customised mitigatory measures to reduce the company’s environmental impact.

Star invested in a renewable energy carbon credit project to offset its quantified emissions and become carbon neutral.

“We believe that as an organisation, we should use our global scope of resources to support responsible corporate social initiatives,” says Charlie Komar, president and CEO of parent company Komar. “The effort and investment to achieve this certification underscores Komar’s commitment to bold innovation and environmental stewardship. I’m proud that Star is leading the way to minimising our impact on climate change.”

Star Garment Group managing director, A. Sukumaran, adds: “Ethical and responsible business practices are inherent in our culture, including the importance of operating a sustainable company. Star’s outstanding achievement is the result of collaboration, managerial focus and the desire to do business in a positive way.”
