Textile and fibre company Teijin has developed a new polytrimethylene terephthalate (PTT) fibre for use in outerwear, which it says raises the wearer’s wind-chill factor by 5 degrees celsius.

Teijin Frontier Co, the Teijin Group’s fibre-product converting company, says it envisions a wide range of applications for Solotex Thermo, including jeans, pants and bottoms. The company is targeting annual sales of 500 tonnes by the fiscal year ending March 2021.

The fibre, which Teijin Frontier says offers excellent thermal retention and insulation, has been developed to provide high comfort thanks to its softness, form-suitability and stretchability and also absorbs near-infrared sunlight, converting it to heat efficiently due to carbon-based inorganic particles mixed into its monocular structure.

Meanwhile, the firm claims that compared to conventional polyester fibre, Solotex Thermo raises the wearer’s wind-chill factor by 5 degrees celsius, as demonstrated in a sunlight heat-storage test conducted by Boken Quality Evaluation Institute.

Earlier this year, Teijin Frontier developed a new functional fabric for use in sportswear, which it said can be used as a substitute for cotton in sweat-suits.
