The German-based the Partnership for Sustainable Textiles is joining forces with non-profit Textile Exchange in a bid to accelerate the shift toward a more sustainable and responsible apparel industry.
Set up in 2014 by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the Partnership is a multi-stakeholder initiative with about 130 members working to improve conditions in global textile production – from raw materials production to end-of-life disposal.

Textile Exchange, meanwhile, is pushing the adoption of preferred fibre and materials through its industry standards, which include the Responsible Down Standard (RDS) and the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS).
The two organisations will initially collaborate on awareness and capacity building; provide a platform for dialogue between producers, brands and other supply chain players; explore ways to build stronger alignment and harmonisation of requirements; and promote tools to document and verify businesses’ sustainability efforts to create measurable and meaningful change within the industry.
German e-commerce giant Otto Group is a member of both initiatives. “As we fundamentally believe in the power of mutual recognition and collaboration and see the common goals of both organisations – especially but not limited to the field of sustainable fibres and materials – we highly welcome this partnership,” says Felix Rauer, manager of corporate responsibility (chemical management supply chain).
Next steps for Textile Exchange and the Partnership for Sustainable Textiles are to identify areas for concrete projects including milestones and goals that will be communicated to each organisation’s members.
