Tyton BioSciences, a specialist in mixed-textile recycling technology, has received an award from Fashion Positive Plus in support of its work towards achieving Gold level Cradle to Cradle certification for its products.

Tyton’s water-based recycling technology can recover cotton and polyester from blended textiles, which account for the majority of garments. A key selling point is its ability to produce inputs for fibres at competitive quality and price to virgin inputs, the firm says.

Administered by the C2CPII, the Cradle to Cradle Certified Products Program is an independent, third-party verified certification scheme for products and materials that are developed to respect human and environmental health, designed for future use cycles, and that utilise clean energy and water throughout the supply chain. Cradle to Cradle product certification is awarded at five levels (Basic, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum), with each higher level imposing a more rigorous set of requirements.

Fashion Positive Plus is a membership-based sector initiative of the C2CPII. It is comprised of apparel companies driving the circular fashion movement, including Gap Inc and its Athleta brand, Eileen Fisher, G-Star Raw, H&M, Loomstate, Kering Group, Mara Hoffman, Marks & Spencer and Stella McCartney.

The award will help Tyton pave the way for wider adoption of the company’s clean recycled products throughout the fashion industry.

In the United States alone, more than 25bn pounds of textiles is produced each year, according to the Council for Textile Recycling, of which 85%, or 21bn pounds, of textiles are sent to landfills and account for more than 5% of all municipal waste. Globally, the textile and fashion industries are responsible for more than 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions according to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

“This award helps us pursue an important certification that will give the fashion industry confidence that our technology not only fills the gap in the circular fashion economy but also has a positive environmental impact,” says Tyton CEO, Peter Majeranowski. “One day soon, I look forward to when we all toss our old clothes in the recycling bin next to our paper, plastic and metals.”

Tyton BioSciences will commence commercial operations in 2019 and deliver product to its brand partners made from recycled clothing.
