UK craft jean maker Blackhorse Lane Ateliers is to establish what it claims will be London’s first washing lab where it will collaborate on a new project to develop sustainable laundering and finishing techniques for apparel.

A UK Fashion & Textiles Association (UKFT) member, Blackhorse Lane Ateliers opened its doors in April 2016 and manufactures and sells its own line of selvedge and organic raw denim jeans.

It has been awarded a grant from the Business of Fashion, Textiles and Technology (BFTT) Small to Medium Enterprises Creative R&D Programme to develop the facility, which it will manage and maintain for industry use across the board.

The move will see Blackhorse Lane Ateliers work in collaboration with the Centre for Circular Design at Chelsea College of Arts (UAL) to develop a new understanding for designers and students in the UK on how to wash and finish garments in a sustainable way, inspired by the principles of the circular economy.

UKFT says the joint study has already begun to raise awareness in the academic community of the importance of sustainable washing and finishing techniques in ensuring that garments meet standards of best-practice even in the later stages of manufacturing.
