The American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) has published the thirteenth edition of its Restricted Substances List (RSL), covering apparel, footwear, and home textiles.

“Sourcing decisions are some of the most difficult to make,” said AAFA president and CEO Kevin Burke, adding that the RSL “assists the industry in creating a safer and more sustainable supply chain.”

Reviewed and updated every six months, the publication covers chemicals and other substances whose presence in a product is restricted through a government regulation or law.  The list identifies the most restrictive iteration of that regulation worldwide.

The thirteenth release has been updated to reflect changes spurred by the EU’s REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical substances), as well as other state and international regulations.

The list is a key resource for chemical management strategies, and is available as a free download from AAFA’s website. As well as English, it is available in Chinese, Vietnamese, and Spanish.
