Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) has implemented a new regulation on the use of formaldehyde and azo dyes in textile and apparel products sold in the country.

The regulation specifies limits and inspections methods for formaldehyde and aromatic amines derived from azo colourants in textile products. It applies to all textile manufacturers and importers working in the Vietnamese market, and follows the revocation of Circular No. 37/2015/TT-BCT in November 2016.

Under the new regulation, formaldehyde levels in textile products for children under 36 months of age should not exceed 30mg/kg. For textile products in direct contact with skin, the limit is 75mg/kg, while textile products without direct skin contact should not exceed 300mg/kg.

Meanwhile, the regulation also proposes a single maximum limit of content of 30 mg/kg for each aromatic amine, in any textile product.

The new standard will take effect from 1 May 2018 and applies to “organisations and individuals manufacturing, importing and trading textile and garment products before putting them into the Vietnamese market, state management agencies and other organisations and individuals involved.”
