Clean Production Action’s GreenScreen Certified standard has been recognised by the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Foundation as a certification standard.

The standard, which launched less than a year ago, has been accepted by ZDHC as the latest accepted indicator of ZDHC MRSL conformance. The certificates that are issued by GreenScreen Certified may now be used by chemical suppliers to indicate Level 1 conformance of their products to the ZDHC MRSL on the ZDHC Chemical Gateway – Chemical Module.

The move means ZDHC now cooperates with six certifiers, which all indicate conformance to the ZDHC Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (ZDHC MRSL) on different levels.

Launched at the Kingpins Show for the denim industry in Amsterdam in April of last year, GreenScreen Certified builds on GreenScreen for Safer Chemicals, which launched in 2007 allowing companies to transparently assess, compare and communicate information on chemical toxicity.

The standard sets three levels of certification: bronze, silver and gold. The multiple certification levels are designed to allow for continual improvement. They acknowledge organisations that are early in the journey to safer chemicals, recognise those designing formulations using more benign ingredients, and provides transparency on chemical hazards, while protecting proprietary formulations.

Clean Production Action is a mission-driven non-profit research and design organisation that creates strategies and solutions towards a healthy chemical and material economy.

Its Green Screen standard joins NimkarTek Detox Laboratory (NDL), Eco Passport by Oeko-Tex, ToxServices Full Materials Disclosure (ToxFMD), BLC Chem-MAP and the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) as ZDHC Accepted means of checking chemical formulations for conformance to the ZDHC MRSL.

To accelerate the global impact of ZDHC’s Roadmap 2020 programme, the organisation decided early on not to start its own certification system for Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (MRSL) conformant chemistry but instead to leverage existing certification as indicators of ZDHC MRSL conformance.
