Kraig Lab preps first spider silk fibre shipments for apparel sector

Spider silk producer Kraig Biocraft Laboratories is reportedly preparing to ship its first spider silk fibre samples to three firms in the fashion and performance textiles sectors.

These shipments will mark the company’s initial commercial sales, representing the culmination of nearly 20 years of development, from laboratory achievements to scaled silk production in Asia.

According to 24/7 Market News’ report, the three companies receiving the samples include two in sports apparel and one in luxury textiles.

Kraig Labs will supply recombinant spider silk fibres designed to provide toughness, elasticity, breathability, and biodegradability for use in performance gear and luxury fashion.

The shipment volumes are intended for spinning, weaving, dyeing, and practical performance validation, which are standard procedures before mass adoption in the textile industry.

24/7 Market News reports that this milestone marks a change in competition within the biomaterials sector.

“For years, spider silk has been the ‘holy grail’ of performance fibres, tougher than steel by weight, yet softer and more flexible than nylon. With Kraig Labs now moving from research to delivery, the race is officially on,” the report said.

Spider silk offers a plastic-free alternative for apparel brands addressing sustainability targets such as the EU’s 2030 textile waste reduction mandates.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP 2025) has reported that textiles account for 35% of ocean microplastic pollution. The total sustainable fashion market is valued at $6.5bn.

Kraig Labs uses a technology platform that integrates genetic engineering and traditional sericulture, enabling silkworms to produce spider silk without synthetic fermentation tanks.

Its production currently operates through several rearing centres in the ASEAN region to fulfil rising sample requests from consumer brands and technical material developers.

Beyond the first three recipients, Kraig Labs is pursuing opportunities across luxury fashion, outdoor gear, defence applications, and other areas.

Following these initial deliveries, Kraig Labs expects to move into the next phase of wider adoption and longer-term production agreements.

In 2024, Kraig Biocraft Laboratories launched its largest production cycle for its BAM-1 line, which it said at the time would more than double the company’s previous single-batch caterpillar production record.
