Schuh, Floreeda partner to recycle acrylic footwear displays

Fashion footwear retailer Schuh has teamed up with Stockport-based acrylic manufacturer Floreeda to recycle old footwear displays into new, sustainable risers for showcasing shoes in-store.

This collaboration is set to reduce carbon emissions significantly, with a reported saving of 1064kg of CO₂e already achieved.

Floreeda has been using its proprietary recycling technology, REFLO, to convert Schuh's end-of-life acrylic risers into fresh display material.

REFLO is a low-impact process that repurposes waste display products into 4mm clear and coloured acrylic granules, according to Floreeda. These granules are then reformed into new sheet material without compromising the acrylic's quality or aesthetics.

Schuh visual merchandising Kathryn Masterman said: “Our goal as a business is to do more good. That’s why we team up with partners like Floreeda — it helps us get smarter about how we use materials, extend their life, and track and reduce our carbon footprint.”

The initiative has already resulted in the production of 450 new kids’ footwear risers from 190kg of recycled materials.

These risers are now featured in Schuh stores throughout the UK and Ireland, including locations like Birmingham Bullring and London Oxford Circus.

The programme features a ‘recycling initiative’ where participants can return their end-of-life cycle risers to Floreeda for continuous material reuse.

To educate customers on this eco-friendly process, QR codes have been placed on the new risers, providing information about the recycling procedure and its benefits.

Floreeda managing director Paul Jones said: “Acrylic can’t be recycled in the same way as other plastics, so we’ve been exploring a sustainable alternative for some time. With REFLO, we are in a position to support our customers across a variety of sectors with a means to recycle and repurpose their waste acrylic products and off-cuts.”

Headquartered in Livingston, Scotland, Schuh offers more than 100 brands alongside their own-label collection through its network of over 120 stores across the UK and Ireland as well as online.

In April last year, Schuh partnered with Vintage Threads, a curated vintage and reworked clothing retailer, for an Earth Day initiative that introduced 57 handmade pieces crafted from preloved footwear.
