Teijin Frontier develops multi-functional textile for sportswear, outdoor market

Fibre and product converting company Teijin Frontier has developed a new “multi-functional comfort” textile intended for use in sports and outdoor clothing.

The material is designed to keep the skin side drier and incorporates cooling features such as heat shielding and ultraviolet (UV) protection, as well as properties including reduced transparency and less visible sweat marks.

Teijin Frontier used its spinning technology for core-sheath conjugate yarns and proprietary fibre processing to produce high-crimp, false-twist textured core-sheath yarns in a full-dull finish that limits light transmission and UV penetration.

According to the company, these yarns give the fabric its softness and feel.

The textile’s construction places water-repellent and water-absorbent yarns on the skin-facing layer, which Teijin Frontier claims allows it to quickly absorb perspiration and transfer it to the exterior surface without reversing back towards the skin.

The company stated that the high titanium dioxide content in the core-sheath conjugate yarns blocks UV rays and heat while reducing transparency.

The specific arrangement of these yarns is intended to lessen visible sweat marks by minimising light reflectance differences between wet and dry areas.

Teijin Frontier also indicated that the product does not use per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

The textile, available in both woven and knitted forms, will be introduced for the 2027 Spring/Summer season in both Japan and international markets.

Initial sales targets are set at 150,000 metres (m) for fiscal 2027 and 400,000m by fiscal 2029.

In addition to sports and outdoor clothing industry, the company plans to expand the textile’s application into wider lifestyle applications such as fashion and innerwear.

In July of last year, Teijin Frontier introduced a grievance mechanism intended to protect human rights across its global supply chain.
