UK outdoor clothing brand Rab and backpack specialist Low Alpine are taking the next step to improving working conditions in their manufacturing operations by becoming the latest members of the Fair Wear Foundation (FWF).
As an NGO, the Fair Wear Foundation has been working for many years to promote good working conditions in the countries where garment production takes place. As FWF members, Rab and Low Alpine, owned by British company Equip, will have their production sites inspected by Fair Wear.
The organisation keeps track of the improvements made by the companies it works with. And by sharing expertise, social dialogue and strengthening industrial relations, it helps increase the effectiveness of their efforts. The multi-stakeholder initiative has over 130 members and a broad support base consisting of parties such as InRetail, Modint, CNV International, Mondiaal FNV and Clean Clothes Campaign.
“We’re happy to welcome two new strong outdoor brands,’ says Fair Wear director Alexander Kohnstamm. “Equip is seriously committed to working on better labour conditions for the people who are making their clothes. During their first Performance Check, we will check Equip’s efforts. It’s positive to hear they’re already investing in equal and sustainable relations with their suppliers, a crucial step towards improved labour conditions for garment workers.”
Matt Gowar, Equip CEO, adds: “We have always used the best technical suppliers to manufacture our products and we strive to develop long term, trusted relationships with them regardless of where they operate across the globe. We demand our partners provide safe working conditions, treat their employees fairly and with respect. Becoming a member of Fair Wear makes sense as we’ll use their support to strengthen our overseas partnerships and monitor, evaluate and improve working conditions across our global supply chain. We are looking forward to a strong and collaborative partnership with Fair Wear and other member brands to make garment production fair for everyone.”
