Japanese fibre and textile specialist Toray Industries is carrying out a group-wide investigation into its operations after discovering that one of its units has been falsifying quality-related data for many years.

The company, which is one of Japan’s biggest materials manufacturers, has found 149 cases of data fabrication at its subsidiary Toray Hybrid Cord over a period from April 2008 to July 2016.

The incident relates to inspection reports for product parts made in its factory headquarters and supplied to car parts manufacturers, felt makers for paper production, and tire manufacturers.

While the company stresses it has received no reports of any problems in the performance and safety of the products concerned, it says it is “using this opportunity to investigate the operations of the entire Toray Group.” It adds: “At present, no legal violations or other problems relating to product safety have been found.”

Speaking at a news conference yesterday (28 November) Toray president Akihiro Nikkaku said: “I believe that there are no irregularities in our products to big customers like Boeing or Fast Retailing,” according to the Nikkei Asian Review.

The company supplies fabrics to casual clothing brand Uniqlo (a division of Fast Retailing) and also provides carbon fibre to Boeing.
