Leather chemicals and coatings company Stahl has opened a new Application Lab in Arzignano in Italy, and has joined forces with New Zealand’s Lowe Corporation which will use the company’s EasyWhite Tan tanning system.

The Application Lab will develop new technologies, customised solutions and in-house training for clients in industries including shoe uppers and leather goods.

The facility will also demonstrate the company’s leather chemicals portfolio, including sustainable leather solutions Proviera – Probiotics for Leather, Stahl EasyWhite Tan and Stahlite, along with the Stahl Neo leather finishing portfolio.

The lab is adjacent to Stahl’s Center of Excellence in Castelfranco di Sotto (Pisa), which was opened in 2016 and is specialises in solutions for shoes and leather goods.

The company now has 37 Application Labs around the world.

Meanwhile, Stahl EasyWhite Tan will enable Lowe Corporation, which markets tanned hides, pelts and skins, to create leather with a lower environmental impact, while using significantly less salt.

Because no additional salt is needed, salt in tanning wastewater can be reduced by 80%, less water is needed during tanning and the wastewater is less polluted. Moreover the tanning process is simplified which results in time, energy and costs savings, the companies say.
