The global apparel industry experienced an 18% drop in new job postings related to environmental sustainability in Q3 2022 compared with the previous quarter, according to GlobalData’s whitepaper on Environmental Sustainability in Apparel – Hiring Activity in Q3 2022. This compares to an 121% increase versus Q3 2021.

Notably, Bakers jobs accounted for a 16% share of the global apparel industry’s environmental sustainability-related total new job postings in Q3 2022, down 22% over the prior quarter.

Bakers drive environmental sustainability-related hiring activity

Bakers, with a share of 16%, emerged as the top environmental sustainability-related job roles within the apparel industry in Q3 2022, with new job postings drop by 22% quarter-on-quarter. Butchers and Other Meat, Poultry, and Fish Processing Workers came in second with a share of 13% in Q3 2022, with new job postings drop by 33% over the previous quarter.

The other prominent environmental sustainability roles include Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Mechanics and Installers with a 6% share in Q3 2022, Miscellaneous Managers with a 5% share of new job postings.

Top five companies in apparel industry accounted for 25% of hiring activity

The top companies, in terms of number of new job postings tracked by GlobalData, as of Q3 2022 were Walmart, Amazon.com, Neiman Marcus Group LTD and BPS Direct. Together they accounted for a combined share of 25% of all environmental sustainability-related active jobs in the apparel industry.

Walmart posted 2,148 environmental sustainability-related new jobs in Q3 2022, Amazon.com 489 jobs, Neiman Marcus Group LTD 213 jobs, and BPS Direct 181 jobs, according to GlobalData’s Job Analytics.

Hiring activity was driven by the US with an 80% share of total active job postings, Q3 2022

The largest share of environmental sustainability-related new job postings in the apparel industry in Q3 2022 was in the US with 80% followed by the UK (8%) and India (2%). The share represented by the US was three percentage points lower than the 83% share it accounted for in Q2 2022.
