Sales and Related Occupations drive apparel hiring activity

Sales and Related Occupations, with a share of 33% new job postings, was the occupation with the greatest hiring activity in the North American apparel industry in Q1 2023 , ahead of Management Occupations with a 7% share of new job postings.

The other prominent roles included Office and Administrative Support Occupations with a 5% share in Q1 2023, Transportation and Material Moving Occupations with a 4% share and Arts, Design, Entertainment, Sports, and Media Occupations with a 3% share of new job postings.

Top five companies accounted for 38% of hiring activity

Walmart posted 18,000 jobs in Q1 2023 and registered a decline of 70% over the previous quarter, followed by Macy's with 16,438 jobs and a 12% drop. TJX, with 11,945 jobs, and Abercrombie & Fitch, with 8,640 jobs, recorded a 1% rise and a 25% drop, respectively, while Gap recorded a 23% decline with a 7,463 new job postings during Q1 2023.

The US held the leading share of the North American apparel hiring activity with a 97.48% share, a 39% decrease over Q4 2022. Canada was next with 2.27%, four-percentage-point down over the previous quarter.
