The global apparel industry noticed a 1.9% drop in IT hiring activity in May 2022 over the previous month, led by Amazon’s 71.86% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.

The apparel industry’s overall hiring activity declined 5.58% when compared with April 2022.

Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 6.27% share of the global apparel industry’s hiring activity in May 2022, up 0.06% over the last three-month average share.

According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of May 2022 were 4.92% lower when compared with the previous month.

The decrease was a result of 20.13% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers drive apparel IT hiring activity

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 84.31% emerged as the top IT occupation in the apparel hiring activity in May 2022, a 10.43% decline over the previous month. Database and Network Administrators and Architects came in second with a share of 6.22% in May 2022, down 4.04% over the previous month.

The other prominent IT roles include Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 4.84% share in May 2022, a decline of 4.15% over the previous month, and Computer and Information Analysts with a 1.89% share in May 2022 and a rise of 18.68% over April 2022.

 

Top five apparel companies by recruitment activity in May 2022

The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average decline of 2.9% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global apparel industry during May 2022 over April 2022.

Amazon posted 4,112 IT jobs in May 2022 and registered a drop of 5.67% over the previous month, followed by Walmart with 305 jobs and a 35.79% decline. Dollar Tree with 285 IT jobs and Target with 136 jobs, recorded a 7025% growth and a 17.24% rise, respectively, while Inter IKEA Holding recorded a 27.43% drop with 82 job postings during May 2022.

Regional composition of IT hiring in apparel industry

North America emerged as the leading region in the global apparel IT hiring activity in May 2022 with a 71.25% share, which marked a 7.63% drop over the previous month.

Asia-Pacific stood next with 13.7%, registering an 18.42% month-on-month decline. Europe was the third leading region with a 13.37% share and a 7.75% rise over April 2022.

In the fourth place was Middle East & Africa with a share of 1.03% and a month-on-month drop of 42.16%. South & Central America stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 0.65%, registering a 63.73% decrease over the previous month.
