The latest version of the American Apparel & Footwear Association’s (AAFA) Restricted Substance List (RSL) covers 12 categories with more than 250 banned or restricted chemicals in apparel, footwear, and home textile products.

The open-industry resource is available for all industry professionals and is updated to reflect additions or changes to regulations and laws that restrict or ban certain chemicals in finished products.

“Keeping up with continuously evolving regulations at the global, national, and state level results in major complexities for our members,” says Rick Helfenbein, president and CEO of the American Apparel & Footwear Association. “For more than a decade, AAFA has provided the Restricted Substance List as a solution to the complex dilemma of evolving global regulations. It is with great pride that we release this landmark edition to the broader community, as a resource to ensure product safety around the world.”

The RSL was developed by AAFA’s RSL Task Force, which reviews and updates the list regularly to reflect the latest global regulatory changes.

It serves as a practical tool to help individuals in textile, apparel and footwear companies, and their suppliers – responsible for environmental compliance throughout the supply chain – to become more aware of various national and international regulations governing the amount of substances that are permitted in finished home textile, apparel, and footwear products.

The 20th edition of the RSL can be downloaded here, with translated versions also available in Spanish, Vietnamese/Tieng Viet or Mandarin.
