With the eighth anniversary of the Rana Plaza collapse in Bangladesh approaching, the IndustriAll Global Union is urging consumers to join social media action to campaign for safe factories for garment workers.

24 April marks eight years since the industrial tragedy of Rana Plaza, which killed more than 1,000 garment workers and injured thousands more.

“Approaching the eighth anniversary of the Rana Plaza collapse, safe factories for garment workers still need to be fought for. Please join the social media action for the fight for safe factories and to support the demand for a global agreement on factory safety,” IndustriAll says.

Eight years on from the tragedy, garment workers still need to raise their voices to demand safe factories, IndustriAll says, adding in the month of March alone, over 40 garment workers lost their lives in Morocco and Egypt due to unsafe factories.

The union is asking people to update their Facebook profile picture with a frame calling for safe factories, download a poster from its website, take a photo, and post on social media, and use the hashtags: #GarmentWorkersNeedUnions, #IMadeYourClothes, #RPNeverAgain.

IndustriAll is hosting a live Facebook debate on safe factories at 11 am CET on 23 April with H&M, ASOS, Tchibo and Esprit.
