Apparel retail group Gap has launched a dedicated e-commerce site aimed at Canadian consumers for its Gap, Banana Republic and Old Navy brands.

The new site will be served by the company’s dedicated fulfillment centre in Ontario, meaning that customers will not have to pay import and customs duties, or see their deliveries held up by customs delays.

“Canadians are increasingly seeking effective online retail options and we have made significant investments to build a dedicated e-commerce site in English and French to meet those needs,” said Toby Lenk, president of Gap Direct.

Global sales for Gap Direct have grown from US$595m in 2005 to $1.1bn in 2009.

The company is due to launch another dedicated e-commerce site in the UK this month, and expects to have stores in China, Italy and Australia by the end of the year.
