  • The vice chairman of the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS) has said it is “critical” for the country’s textile firms to renovate their manufacturing systems toward smart production amid Industry 4.0 Speaking at a conference held with the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH), Truong Van Cam said opportunities would be there for those who took action to move towards smart manufacturing.   • The Labour Ministry of Cambodia has announced the National Institute of Statistics (NIS) will survey garment workers on their living conditions ahead of minimum wage talks. The survey, which will start on 31 July and end on 28 August, aims to target 1,500 workers in 75 factories in the capital of Phnom Penh and other provinces in the country. The news however, has been met with some scepticism from unionists regarding the “likely quality” of the survey. PHNOM PENH POST

  • Indian fabrics and apparel major Raymond is looking to capture the stitched garments market in Europe and the US by exporting products from its new 100-crore plant in Ethiopia. The company has set a target of an annual revenue of about 250 crore within a year from the plant by exporting mainly to the two developed markets. The 27,000 square metre plant, set up at the Hawassa Industrial Park, has a capacity to produce 1.4m suits per annum. Exports will start from early next month. ECONOMIC TIMES INDIA

  • A new technical centre for the footwear industry has opened in Vietnam – a joint initiative between the host country and Italy. Called the The Italy-Vietnam Footwear Industry Technology Centre, and located in the Di An district of Binh Duong province, the centre is equipped with up-to-date footwear manufacturing technology from Italy. Its aim will be to help Vietnamese manufacturers improve the quality of the shoes they produce, through consulting and workforce training programmes, as well as through technology transfer.
