  • The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) is calling for policy measures to revive the textile sub-sector of the economy, saying that federal government plans to create 3m new jobs in the textile industry is an ambitious one which can only be put into practice if there is a strong political commitment.   • A fire has partially destroyed a garment factory in Kampong Speu, Cambodia. None of the 650 workers of the New Best Global Textile company were killed or injured in the fire, having run from the building carrying sewing machines. The fire was either caused by an electrical fault or due to sparks from a worker welding steel to repair the roof, which then set fire to clothing. PHNOM PENH POST 

  • Come 2017 and India might lose $2bn or more in terms of garment and fabric exports due to the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). TPP member countries are supposed to source 75% of raw materials such as yarn and fabric within themselves, if they are to export apparel. With India not being part of the TPP, the country could lose in terms of yarn exports to Vietnam and other TPP member countries as well as garment exports to the US, as these would now shift to other TPP member nations.   • The Generalized Scheme of Preferences (GSP) special incentive arrangement (GSP+) is expected to impact positively on Sri Lanka’s apparel sector, according to an NDB Securities report. Sri Lanka’s apparel and textiles exports account for around 45% of total global exports, and contribute to around 60% of total exports to the EU. Hence, GSP+, if awarded to Sri Lanka, will benefit the country more through the apparel and textiles sector compared to any other sector covered under the scheme. DAILY NEWS

  • Sri Lanka is to establish around 15 garment factories in Sri Lanka’s under-developed provinces in a bid to empower women in rural areas. The factories will be built in the eastern and Uva provinces. Training will be given by the Sri Lanka Institute of Textile and Apparel. HIRU NEWS
