INDIA: Officials Double Duty On Cotton Imports

Indian customs officials have doubled the basic import duty on cotton to 10 per cent in a bid to help domestic cotton growers. The duty hike comes amid a 30 per cent slump in Indian cotton prices since August, with the country importing nearly 2.2 million bales of cotton between October 2000 and September 2001.
