Austrian cellulosic fibre producer Lenzing has revealed plans to “green up” the industry and expand its position as a sustainability leader amid the news its Chinese subsidiary, Lenzing Nanjing Fibers Co (LNF), is to leave the Collaboration for Sustainable Development of Viscose (CV).

Launched last year in partnership with two Chinese textile trade associations – the China Chemical Fiber Industry Association and the China Cotton Textile Industry Association – CV aims to improve the sustainability of the sector from sourcing to production.

The group, which is due to release its first Sustainability Report later this month, also includes 12 other Chinese viscose producers whose businesses account for more than 50% of the global viscose production capacity.

In a statement today (8 March), Lenzing said: “As a sustainability leader in the industry, the Lenzing Group will now pursue its own path in collaborating with the entire value chain to green up the industry and thus expand the company’s position.

“This cooperation will involve forest owners, spinners, weavers and knitters, fabric makers as well as brands and retailers selling products made from wood-based fibres.”

Lenzing announced plans to acquire the remaining 30% stake in LNF in October of last year.
