Boston-based New Balance Athletics is preparing to open an advanced manufacturing facility in Methuen, also in Massachusetts, as it expands its domestic manufacturing footprint.

“This factory would complement our existing manufacturing facility in Lawrence by specifically housing our advanced manufacturing operations and, if our plans proceed as scheduled, we would begin operations within the next 12 to 18 months,” explains Amy Dow, New Balance Athletics director of public relations and government affairs.

The new facility, which would be located at 596 Lowell Street, will include advance manufacturing, research and development and 3D printing operations for the global athletic footwear and apparel brand.

“Not only will this new facility bring millions of dollars of investment, it will, most importantly, create jobs,” adds Methuen Mayor Jim Jajuga.

New Balance employs more than 8,000 people around the globe, and with worldwide sales of $4.2bn. It maintains a manufacturing presence in the United States with five factories, as well as one in the United Kingdom for the European market.

The company is focused on driving “even greater speed, agility and innovation,” according to Joe Preston, who took over as CEO from Rob DeMartini at the beginning of this year.
