The first Philippine Garment Industry and Fabric Expo is taking place this weekend, focusing on attracting potential investors to the country’s garment market.

Due to run until Sunday (26 August), the event will be held at the SMX Convention Centre in Manila and will bring together garment and fabric manufacturers, retailers and wholesalers.

Endorsed by the Philippine Board of Investment (BoI) and the Confederation of Wearable Exporters of the Philippines, the event will reportedly showcase leather tannery, leather and leather goods machinery, along with leather goods design and computer-aided tools and software.

Organised by CP Exhibition Ltd in collaboration with Philippine Exhibition and Trade Corporation, it is also expected to feature fabrics and garment accessories, garment manufacturing machinery, dyeing machinery and chemicals, along with exhibitions on Industry 4.0 and quality control.

According to an overview of the Philippines on re:source, the new online strategic planning tool from the team behind just-style, the country’s garment industry used to be a major export force but has struggled in recent years. It does, however, benefit from GSP+ status allowing it to export duty-free to the EU, and this has helped to attract new investment in the industry from around Asia.

Efforts have also been made to increase exports to the US, with the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) targeting US$1bn in incremental investments, $3bn in apparel exports and 600,000 jobs.
