The World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry (WFSGI) is heading to Vietnam for this year’s World Manufacturers Forum (WMF), where the focus will be on ‘Manufacturing 4.0: Steps towards a future vision.’
The sixth edition of the annual WMF takes place in Ho Chi Minh City on 11-12 December 2018, and will bring together a wide-ranging and exciting line-up of speakers, including experts from the sportswear and footwear sectors, as well as academics and digital technology specialists from around the world.

The WMF 2018 covers four key aspects of Manufacturing 4.0:
- Software and innovative technologies
- Workforce in a changing landscape
- Industry 4.0 implementation phase
- Raw materials disruption
The software and innovative technologies sessions will include Nick Russell from IDEA London at University College London, who will look at the ‘State of Blockchain 2019’ through working examples; while Martin Strommer, advisor to the board at nCinga Innovations in Singapore will discuss ‘Manufacturing in the digital age – the need for real-time visibility and data driven decision making.’
Taking a closer look at the workforce in a changing landscape is Catherine Cole, executive director at Alvanon in Hong Kong, who will share insight on ‘The state of skills: human labour in the digital age’; while ‘worker empowerment in the supply chain’ will be the focus for Harry Nurmansyah, senior director, field operation, social & environmental affairs, Asia Pacific at adidas Group in Indonesia.
The Industry 4.0 implementation phase will include presentations on ‘Digitalisation and smart supply chains – the next evolutionary step of the footwear industry’ by Christian Decker, CEO at shoe production engineering specialist DESMA; and Jonas Wand, chief sales officer at Foursource Group in Germany, who will delve into ‘Industry 4.0 key entry points available and affordable today.’

By GlobalDataWhile raw materials disruptions will be given over to Kanji Kajiwara, research fellow at Shinshu University in Japan, who will discuss ‘Fabrics make records: from natural fibre to synthetic fibre’; followed by Marius Janta, senior project manager, research, application & BD, at WT | Wearable Technologies in Germany, who will share ‘Industry example innovative technology and materials in manufacturing.’
A workshop is also planned for the morning of the second day, where delegates will be able to discuss the implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies and gain practical and pragmatic takeaways relevant for use in their own business or supply chain. The workshop will be hosted by Raimund Klein, executive vice president at Siemens in Singapore.
The WMF 2018 builds on themes from previous years, which have most recently looked at ‘Moving on to a digital and automated business of the future,’ ‘Beyond Lean Manufacturing’ and ‘High-Tech Innovation, Digitalisation and Robotics.’
