Outdoor apparel brand Patagonia has launched a scheme which gives customers store and online credit in exchange for their used Patagonia goods, in a bid to boost circularity in the industry.

On its website, Patagonia urges customers to trade in their used gear to “keep it in play and out of the landfill” via the Worn Wear programme.

Customers can trade in their items at a retail location or by mail, and receive credit toward another new or used garment.

The company says Worn Wear is its contribution to recycling apparel and investing in the circular economy.

“Worn Wear is a set of tools to help our customers partner with Patagonia to take mutual responsibility to extend the life of the products Patagonia makes and customers purchase. The programme provides significant resources for responsible care, repair, reuse and resale, and recycling at the end of a garment’s life.”

Patagonia is one of the sector leaders when it comes to sustainability. At the end of 2018, it partnered with HeiQ on research to explore new ways for a sustainable textile finishing technology to achieve breathable and durable water repellence (DWR) with best-in-class performances, considering the lack of clarity that currently exists on the risk of PFA/PFC alternatives.
