British company Ananas Anam, which produces the natural-based material Piñatex, has been granted B Corp certification.

Companies that are B Corporation certified are for-profit companies that meet the highest verified standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. As of today, there are more than 3,300 B Corps in 150 industries and 71 countries around the world.

The B Corp community works toward reduced inequality, lower levels of poverty, a healthier environment, stronger communities, and the creation of high-quality jobs.

“It feels like we have now gained the ‘official’ status that we have been striving for since day one, when I formed the company, back in 2011,” says Ananas Anam founder Dr Carmen Hijosa. “We are all in this together…from the pineapple farming communities we work with, support and grow together, to our manufacturing partners, suppliers, clients and investors.”

Em Mendoza, head of sales and business development, adds: “To be a part of the B Corp community acknowledges all our hard work in the past years. We always try our best to help our clients in enabling them to realise their goal of building a sustainable brand not only by using a material that is not harmful to the environment but at the same time, giving a positive social impact to the local communities we work in. The certification is a welcome recognition during this time of crisis and will give inspiration for us to continue on doing the already great work we have begun.”

Ananas Anam’s Piñatex is made of fibres from pineapple leaves, a by-product of the pineapple harvest. A natural and sustainable alternative to leather, Piñatex is fit for use across fashion and accessories and has been used by more than 1,000 brands worldwide, according to the firm, including Hugo Boss and H&M.
