Italian yarn maker RadiciGroup said that after the excellent environmental performance of recent years, emissions, energy and raw material usage trends remain upbeat, albeit with less striking results.
The findings are outlined in the company’s 14th annual sustainability report, which, as in previous years, has been drawn up according to the guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative.

“The data in the 2017 edition present a sound group and an outstanding economic situation, although operating in very diverse scenarios, some of which are characterised by high levels of uncertainty,” said Angelo Radici in the report’s letter from the president.
During 2017, 40.3% of the electrical energy used by RadiciGroup came from renewable energy sources, down from 51.6% last year.
The group says its “specific choice” to use green electric power and lower environmental impact fuel has enabled its sites to emit 24.5% less greenhouse gas than they would have using the standard national energy mix.
Meanwhile, in the three-year period from 2015 to 2017, the group has reduced its total consumption of energy from fossil sources per unit of product processed by 17.5% (from 7.6 GJ/t in 2011 to 6.3 GJ/t in 2016).

He added after the “considerable progress” made in all of these areas, many future challenges remain – the largest of which will be linked to the circularity of the economy, recycling, and the efficient use of resource.
“Particular attention will surely be reserved for emissions, in light of an increasingly restrictive legislative scenario. There will then be no shortage of energy challenges. I would like us to seek out new paths, especially within the framework of renewable sources, creating a mix of different sources that is able to ensure consistently high levels of green energy.”
RadiciGroup recently expanded the capacity of its yarn twisting facility in Romania to cater for increasing demand for high-value yarns and tailor-made solutions.
