Verification, testing and certification company SGS has been approved to test that chemical formulations meet the requirements of the ZDHC MRSL (Manufactured Restricted Substances List).

The MRSL is a list of chemical substances banned from intentional use in facilities that process textile materials and trim parts in apparel, leather and footwear. The intent of the MRSL is to manage the input of chemicals to the suppliers and remove those hazardous substances from the manufacturing process.

MRSL conformance means that the chemical formulation does not contain any of the MRSL chemical substances above the limits set out by the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) programme, which is working towards zero discharge of hazardous chemicals in the textile, leather and footwear value chain. The ZDHC Programme includes a collaboration of 27 signatory brands, 77 value chain affiliates, and 18 associates.

As the newest certifier, SGS can test to certify chemical formulations with ZDHC MRSL Level 1 conformance on the ZDHC Gateway – Chemical Module.

The laboratories accepted as part of the SGS Global MRSL Conformance Certification Center are SGS’s Hong Kong, Taiwan, India (Chennai), Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Turkey laboratories. All MRSL analysis to produce these certificates must be carried out by these laboratories.

In addition to the MRSL, SGS is working on other ZDHC programmes, like training and wastewater testing, as an Accredited Training Provider (ATP) and accepted wastewater laboratory.
