The UK Fashion and Textile Association (UKFT) is working is with a group of tailoring, couture and high-end garment manufacturers to develop a national apprenticeship standard for garment makers.

The body, which represents designers, manufacturers, agents and retailers, says the programme will be aimed at roles including trainee couturiers, sample makers, tailors, dressmakers, costumiers and sample machinists.

Once approved, the apprenticeship and relevant funding will be available to all employers.

A standard has been created listing the key duties, knowledge, skills and behaviours of the ideal candidate for the role – which is available for comment and feedback until Friday (10 May), when the draft standard will be amended and submitted to the Institute for Apprenticeships for approval prior to drafting the apprenticeship endpoint assessment plan.

Earlier this year, UKFT was the external quality assurance provider for a new fashion studio assistant apprenticeship launched in the UK as part of a bid to offer better career paths throughout the industry.
