US sportswear brand Under Armour could be sending its clothing into space after teaming up with Virgin Galactic to create space suits for passengers and pilots.

The collaboration with the world’s first commercial spaceline will also see Under Armour create uniforms for Virgin Galactic’s team of engineers, astronaut trainers and mission control operatives at its Spaceport America site in New Mexico.

Founded by entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson, and owned by the Virgin Group and Mubadala Investment Group, Virgin Galactic has named Under Armour as its ‘exclusive technical spacewear partner,’ in a move that draws on its expertise in technical apparel and footwear.

The partnership will also see Under Armour design programmes for astronaut physical preparation and recovery, with a focus on enhancing mobility, strength, fitness, nutrition, and sleep.

“Working with Sir Richard and Virgin Galactic is an opportunity of a lifetime, one that has the entire Under Armour team across the world excited,” says Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank. “This is a great opportunity to test our innovation at the highest level and continue to push the limits of human performance.”

The full range of apparel and footwear is set to be revealed later this year, ahead of Sir Richard’s inaugural commercial flight.
