Sportswear company Adidas will continue as official athletic sponsor and product supplier to US Major League Soccer (MLS) until 2018, it has been announced.

The extension of the strategic partnership is aimed at further elevating the status of the sport in the US, as well as developing opportunities for young players, the company said.

“The US is a breeding ground for athletic talent and we need to ensure our home-grown athletes have viable opportunities to play soccer at the highest level,” said Patrik Nilsson, president of Adidas America.

“We need to accelerate the model for soccer development in North America to attract and keep elite talent engaged and excited about professional opportunities in the sport.”

A partner since MLS was established in 1996, Adidas has been a partner of the league, outfitting all teams and supplying the official match ball, since 2004.
