The following is a general round-up of US apparel and footwear retailers’ April sales results released this week:


Apparel retailer J Crew Group Inc said its April same-store sales for its retail division fell four per cent but added total sales rose five per cent to $57.7m from $54.8m in the year-ago period.


Youth-oriented apparel chain Aeropostale Inc reported an eight per cent rise in same-store sales for the four weeks to May 3 and added total sales for the period jumped 40 per cent to $38.5 million from $27.5m


Specialty retailer of music-influenced apparel Hot Topic Inc posted a two per cent slip in same-store sales for last month but added total sales jumped by a third to $32.4m from $24.4m in the year prior.


Leading off-price apparel chain Factory 2-U Stores Inc said its same-store sales rose 3.7 per cent in April with total sales at its 242 outlets up 2.1 per cent to $35.2m from $34.5m in 2002.

Pennsylvania-based American Eagle Outfitters Inc said April same-store sales at its namesake outlets fell 1.4 per cent last month and 6.1 per cent at its under-performing Bluenotes chain in Canada. Total sales rose almost 10 per cent year-on-year to $98.2m.


Specialty retailer of large-size women’s fashion apparel, United Retail Group Inc, reported a 12 per cent slump in April same-store sales and said total sales at its 547 stores fell to $25m from $39.9m in 2002.


The owner of famous lingerie chain Victoria’s Secret, Limited Brands, posted a three per cent climb in April same-store sales and added total sales for the four weeks to May 4 rose to $580.6m from $549.7m.


Leading retailer of men’s classically-styled tailored and casual clothing, Jos A Bank Clothiers Inc, said its same-store sales edged up 0.4 per cent last month with total sales up 13.9 per cent to $22.9m from $20.1m last year.


New Jersey-based kids’ apparel chain The Children’s Place Retail Stores Inc reported a three per cent slip in April same-store sales but added total sales at its 662 stores rose 16 per cent to $59.5m from $51.2m in the year-ago period.


Specialty retailer of leather outerwear and apparel, Wilsons The Leather Experts Inc, posted a one per cent slide in same-store sales for the four weeks to May 3 and said total sales fell 2,2 per cent to $21.5m from $22m last year.


Apparel and footwear chain Stage Stores Inc said its April same-store sales rose 3.6 per cent with total sales at its 362 shops up 7.7 per cent to $65.5m from $60.8m in the prior year period.


Value-priced footwear retailer Shoe Carnival Inc posted a five per cent fall in April same-store sales and said total sales at its 221 outlets rose 18.1 per cent to $46.8m from $39.7m in April of last year.


Women’s fashion retailer Bebe Stores Inc announced a 1.2 per cent rise in same-store sales for last month and said total sales at its 178 stores rose 7.2 per cent to $25.3m from $23.6m in the year-ago period.


Department store operator The Bon-Ton Stores Inc posted a 3.7 per cent fall in same-stores for the four weeks to May 3 and added total sales at its 72 stores fell 4.5 per cent to $47.5m from $49.7m in 2002.


Florida-based women’s fashion chain Chicos FAS Inc reported a 4.7 per cent climb in April same-store sales and added total sales at its 406 outlets jumped 26.9 per cent to $59.6m from $46.9m in the year prior.Casual apparel chain


Pacific Sunwear of California Inc announced 16.9 per cent jump in April same-store sales and said total sales at its 808 shops soared 26.1 per cent to $60.4m from $47.9m last year.


Massachusetts-based clothing retailer Talbots Inc reported a 6.5 per cent fall in same-store sales for last month and added total sales at its 917 stores rose one per cent from the year-ago period to $131.5m.


Leading online discount fashion company Bluefly Inc posted a 16 per cent jump in April sales to $2.6m from $2.3m in the year-ago month.


Texas-based retail giant JC Penney Co Inc reported a 6.9 per cent slide in April same-store sales despite strong sales of children’s apparel over the Easter period.Total sales slipped 3.3 per cent to $2.3 billion from $2.4bn in 2002.


Apparel retailer AnnTaylor Stores Corp revealed a 3.2 per cent fall in April same-store sales with sales down 6.8 per cent at its Ann Taylor division but up 5.7 per cent at its Ann Taylor Loft chain. Total sales rose 6.1 per cent year-on-year to $132.5m.


Youth-oriented fashion chain Abercrombie & Fitch posted a three per cent slide in April same-store sales and added total sales at its 602 stores climbed 14 per cent to $102.7m from $89.8m in the year-ago period.


Sears, Roebuck and Co announced an 8.5 per cent slide in same-store sales for the four weeks ended May 3 and added total domestic store revenues fell eight per cent year-on-year to $2bn despite solid sales of children’s clothing.


Fashion and furnishings retailer Dillard’s Inc posted a two per cent slide in same-store sales for last month and said total sales also slipped two per cent to $536.4m from $548.4m in the year-ago period.


Specialty clothing chain The Wet Seal Inc reported a 16.9 per cent slump in April same-store sales and added total sales fell to $40m from $45.9m in the year prior.


St Louis-based footwear retailer Brown Shoe Co Inc said same-store sales at its Famous Footwear chain rose 4.1 per cent last month with total sales up 8.5 per cent to $91.9m from $84.7m in April 2002. Same-store sales slipped 1.3 per cent at its Naturalizer chain while total sales fell to $10.9m from $12.9m on a lower store base.


Retail giant Federated Department Stores Inc said is same-store sales slipped 1.4 per cent last month with total sales down 1.7 per cent year-on-year-to $1.07bn.


Fast-growing apparel retailer Kohl’s Corp posted a 4.1 per cent slide in same-store sales for the four week period ended May 3, 2003 but added total sales rose increased 5.8 per cent to $718m from $679m last year.


Leading off-price apparel retailer The TJX Companies Inc said its same-store sales were flat last month but added total sales at its 1,500 outlets rose six per cent to $956m from $899m in the year-ago period.


Alabama-based retail giant Saks Inc posted a 2.4 per cent slide in April same-store sales at its 354 stores.


Women’s fashion chain Cache Inc said its same-store sales fell two per cent last month with total sales at its 238 outlets up two per cent year-on-year to $20.1m.


Leading footwear retailer Payless ShoeSource Inc announced a 4.8 per cent slide in April same-store sales and added total sales for the four weeks to May 3 fell 5.2 per cent to $251.5m from $265.4m last year.


Discount retail giant Target Corp reported a 3.9 per cent climb in same-store sales for the four weeks to May 4 and said total sales jumped 11.3 per cent to $3.191bn from $2.866bn in the year-ago period.


California-based discount apparel retailer Ross Stores Inc posted a one per cent slip in April same-store sales and added total sales for the month to May 3 rose nine per cent year-on-year to $289m.


May Department Stores Co announced a 5.6 per cent fall in same-stores sales for April and said total sales rose 3.8 per cent year-on-year to $967.4m.


Virginia-based menswear retailer S&K Famous Brands Inc posted a 16 per cent jump in April same-store sales and added total sales at its 234 stores also rose 16 per cent to $14.8m from $12.8m in 2002.


Troubled retailer The Spiegel Group posted a 16 per cent slide in April same-store sales at its Eddie Bauer division and added total sales for the group plunged 31 per cent to $115.6m from $167m last year.


Leading athletic shoe and apparel retailer Foot Locker Inc posted a 2.5 per cent slip in same-store sales for April and added total sales rose 3.5 per cent year-on-year to $1.13bn.


South Carolina-based apparel chain One Price Clothing Stores Inc posted an 8.2 per cent slide in April same-store sales and added total sales at its 589 stores fell 10.4 per cent year-on-year to $25.3m on a lower store base.


Regional department store operator Gottschalks Inc said its April same-store sales fell three per cent and total sales 5.7 per cent to $43m from $45.6m in the year-ago period.


Tennessee-based apparel retailer Goody’s Family Clothing Inc posted a 5.6 per cent rise in same-store sales for last month and added total sales at its 330 stores rose 4.2 per cent to $95.1m from $91.3m in the year prior.


Leading plus-size women’s apparel chain Charming Shoppes Inc posted a five per cent slide in same-store sales for the four weeks to May 4 but added total sales at its 2,245 outlets fell nine per cent to $187.9m from $206.3m in 2002.


Apparel and footwear retailer Stein Mart Inc said its April same-store sales slipped 3.8 per cent with total sales at its 271 shops down three per cent to $108.4m from $111.8m in the same period of last year.


Philadelphia-based fashion retailer Debs Shops posted an 11.6 per cent slump in April same-store sales and said total sales at its 330 outlets fell 7.5 per cent to $24.3m from $26.3m in the year-ago period.


Minneapolis-based specialty retailer of women’s clothing Christopher & Banks Corp posted a two per cent rise in same-store sales for the five weeks to May 5 and added total sales at its 465 stores soared 24 per cent to $36.8m from $29.7m last year.


Children’s clothing retailer The Gymboree Corp posted an 11 per cent jump in same-store sales for April and added total sales at its 576 shops rose 14 per cent to of $40.9m from $35.8m in the year-ago period.


Casual apparel chain Gadzooks Inc reported a 3.4 per cent slide in April same-store sales and added total sales at its 430 outlets fell 3.6 per cent $21.6m from $22.4m for fiscal April 2002.
