The Bon-Ton Stores announced sales for the five weeks ended February 3, 2001 increased 17.8 per cent to $36.8m versus $31.3m reported in the four weeks ended January 29, 2000. Comparable store sales for the four weeks ended January 27, 2001 decreased 8.7 per cent from the four-week period last year.

Total sales for the fourteen weeks ended February 3, 2001 increased 6.3 per cent to $266.4m from $250.6m reported in the thirteen-week period ended January 29, 2000. Comparable store sales for the thirteen-week period ended January 27, 2001 increased 3.0 per cent over the prior year thirteen-week period.


Sales for the fifty-three week period ended February 3, 2001 increased 5.5 per cent to $749.8m from $711m reported in the fifty-two week period ended January 29, 2000. Comparable store sales for the fifty-two week period ended January 27, 2001 increased 0.7 per cent over the prior year fifty-two week period.


Charming Shoppes, the retail apparel chain, reported that total sales for the five weeks ended February 3, 2001 were $103.5m. The current period’s total sales for five weeks include $28.1m in sales from the Catherines Stores Corporation, including Modern Woman, which has been completely integrated into Catherines.


Total sales for the four weeks ended January 27, 2001 increased 10 per cent to $81m from $73.6m for the four-week period ended January 29, 2000. The current period’s total sales for four weeks include $22m in sales from the Catherines Stores Corporation, including Modern Woman. The prior period’s total sales for four weeks include $20.1m in sales from the Catherines Stores Corporation, including Modern Woman. Comparable store sales for the Fashion Bug stores increased six per cent for the four weeks ended January 27, 2001.


The Children’s Place announced sales of $36.8m for the five-week period ended February 3, 2001 versus sales of $22.1m for the four-week period ended January 29, 2000. Comparable store sales for the four weeks ended January 27, 2001 decreased 1 per cent versus the same four-week period last year. Fiscal 2000 had fifty-three weeks versus fifty-two weeks in fiscal 1999. Comparable store sales calculations do not include this additional week.

Total sales for the fourteen weeks and fourth quarter ended February 3, 2001 increased 35 per cent to $183.6m from $135.5m reported in the thirteen-week period and fourth quarter ended January 29, 2000. Comparable store sales for the fourth quarter increased one per cent versus the prior year period.


The Elder-Beerman Stores sales were $31.8m for the five-week period ended February 3, 2001. Sales for the 14-week quarter were $228.6m and sales for the 53-week year were $656.2m. Because Elder-Beerman’s 2000 fiscal year included 53 weeks compared to 52 weeks in 1999, the company is comparing total and comparable sales results to last year on a 52-week basis to provide a meaningful comparison.


On a four week basis, January total department store sales increased 0.2 per cent compared to January 2000. Comparable store sales decreased 2.0 per cent compared to the same period last year. The best performing businesses in January were ladies’ moderate sportswear, junior sportswear, intimate apparel, furniture, domestics and decorative home.


Gadzooks announced that sales for the five weeks ended February 3, 2001 increased 54 per cent to $20.6m compared to $13.4m for the four-week period ended January 29, 2000. Comparable store sales rose 0.8 per cent for the period versus a 12.4 per cent increase in January of last year.


Sales for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2000 rose 25 per cent to $93.9m, which compares with $75.1m in the fourth quarter of last year. Comparable store sales for the period were up 1.7 per cent versus an 11.3 per cent increase in fiscal 1999. Full year sales reached $288.4m, an increase of 20 per cent versus $240.3m in fiscal 1999. Comparable store sales for the twelve-month period were up 7.6 per cent from a year ago.


Shoe Carnival, a retailer of value-priced footwear and accessories, reported sales for the five-week period ended February 3, 2001, increased 58.9 per cent to $29.6m from sales of $18.6m for the four-week period ended January 29, 2000. Comparable store sales increased four per cent in January for the four-week period ended January 27, 2001. Comparable store sales for the five-week period ended February 3, 2001 increased 4.4 per cent.


Sales for the fourteen-week fourth quarter ended February 3, 2001 increased 33.2 per cent to $112.4m from sales of $84.4m for the thirteen-week fourth quarter ended January 29, 2000. Comparable store sales for the thirteen-week period ended January 27, 2001 increased 5.9 per cent. Sales for the 53-week 2000 fiscal year ended February 3, 2001, increased 23 per cent to $418.1m from sales of $339.9m for the 52-week 1999 fiscal year ended January 29, 2000. Comparable store sales for the 52-week period ended January 27, 2001 increased 2.5 per cent.


Wilsons The Leather Experts reported that sales for the five weeks ended February 3, 2001 increased 41.4 per cent to $65.2m compared to $46.1m for the four weeks ended January 29, 2000. Comparable store sales decreased 6.0 per cent for the five week period ended February 3, 2001 compared to a 30.2 per cent increase for the five week period last year.


Sales for the fourteen week quarter ended February 3, 2001 increased 20.2 per cent to $381.5m from $317.3m for the thirteen week quarter ended January 29, 2000. Comparable store sales increased 3.5 per cent on top of a 12.3 per cent increase for the fourth quarter last year.


Sales for the fifty-three week year ended February 3, 2001 increased 17.2 per cent to $637m from $543.6m for the fifty-two week year ended January 29, 2000. For the year, comparable store sales increased 4.1 per cent on top of an 11.5 per cent increase last year.
