At the Global Fashion Summit held in Copenhagen, Denmark, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), VF Corporation, and Deloitte Switzerland unveiled the Circular Transition Indicators (CTI) Fashion Initiative to bring together key industry players to establish unified standards, metrics, data, and best practices, with the goal of scaling up a circular economy throughout the fashion and textile value chain.

At the core of the CTI Fashion Initiative lies the internationally recognised metrics system, the CTI Fashion Initiative, developed by the WBCSD. By using these metrics, companies can make informed decisions to implement circular practices on a large scale.

Jeff Turner, senior advisor at WBCSD, expressed the importance of the CTI metrics, stating: “CTI provides consistent metrics for measuring circularity within the industry and creates the building blocks for promoting accountability, sustainable value creation and operationalisation of circularity at scale.”

Research by Sitra indicates that circular textile use and recycling alone could reduce global land use by 40% and significantly lower the industry’s carbon footprint. These transformative practices present a staggering economic opportunity estimated at $560bn, according to the Ellen Macarthur Foundation.

Jeannie Renné-Malone, vice president of global sustainability at VF Corporation, highlighted the importance of a common framework for assessing and measuring progress and said: “In a measurable way, CTI enables linking circularity decisions such as product design for a specific purpose, the use of improved materials or the introduction of new business models – all of which are essential to advancing our collective circular ambitions.”

Deloitte Switzerland, is a key partner that stresses the transformative potential of collaboration and standardisation. Carlo Giardinetti, consulting sustainability lead at Deloitte Switzerland, stated: “The CTI Fashion Initiative is about aligning incentives, standardising circularity measures and unlocking innovative business models for both industry players and consumers. We invite companies to join us as we transition from ambition to action.”

The importance of data and transparency in the fashion industry was highlighted by Debbie Shakespeare, senior director of sustainability and compliance at Avery Dennison.

She added: The CTI is a step toward the verified data and agreed industry benchmarks the industry urgently needs on its journey to circular models of resale, repair and textile recycling. With sector-wide standards in place, we can be ready for incoming product transparency legislation. Carbon reduction targets can be tracked and reported. Greenwashing can be rinsed away. And we can provide the critical product data needed for textile sorters and recyclers to carry out the graft of bringing the circular economy to life.”

Under the theme of “Ambition to Action,” the Global Fashion Summit focused on translating industry ambitions into concrete steps towards a more sustainable and responsible fashion sector, both socially and environmentally.
