The company, which produces biomaterials based on silk proteins, stated that Wichert's arrival comes as it moves towards scaling up and commercialising its technology following the entry of its fibre applications into the market.

In his new role, Wichert will be tasked with boosting AMSilk’s commercial operations and expanding the reach of its proprietary silk protein technology, which utilises precision fermentation, into a broader range of applications and markets.

AMSilk said that Wichert will place particular emphasis on commercial outcomes within its Consumer Care Solutions division.

He joins AMSilk with over 25 years of leadership experience in international business settings.  Most recently, Wichert was chief executive officer at Evolva, a Swiss biotechnology company listed on the public markets.

During his tenure at Evolva, he gained capital markets experience and managed the company through a period of strategic change, culminating in its sale to Danstar Ferment AG/Lallemand Group.

He also held senior positions across the speciality chemicals sector, consumer packaged goods, MedTech, and industrial biotechnology, all areas which AMSilk has identified as important for its future development.

Wichert said: “AMSilk is a true pioneer in its field, and I am honoured to join as Chief Executive Officer at such an important stage in the Company’s development. What particularly impressed me is the combination of a unique technology with significant market potential and a highly committed and purpose-driven team.

“This creates a compelling foundation for further growth and the development of new applications. My priority will be to build on these strengths and support AMSilk in realising its full potential across its key markets.”

With Wichert stepping in as CEO, Ulrich Scherbel, who previously led AMSilk through technology development and initial commercialisation, will stay on as managing director and take up the role of chief operating officer, premium filaments.

Scherbel said: “Christian’s appointment marks an important milestone and AMSilk’s next phase of growth. I am proud of what we have achieved, transforming AMSilk by securing strategic partnerships with 21st.BIO, Evonik, and Ajinomoto, and bringing the first commercially available products based on AMSilk’s biotech silk protein yarns to market. I look forward to continuing to develop our Premium Filament business as a key strategic growth pillar and value driver for AMSilk.”
