Financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.
Maxi Sport was established in 1989 with its first location in Merate. The company’s retail presence extends to an online platform, which has been operating since 2002.
Currently, the retailer operates a network of 18 stores nationwide, including six flagship outlets. It offers products covering extreme sports and winter equipment.
Maxi Sport’s owners, Emanuele Sala, Giovanni Sala, Ester Sala, and Giulia Sala, will maintain a shareholding in the business and remain part of the leadership team as the company enters this new phase.
Following the acquisition, Frasers Group intends for Maxi Sport to continue serving Italian customers with its “top-tier” sporting goods format while also planning future expansions for Sports Direct stores within Italy.
Frasers Group CEO Michael Murray said: “Maxi Sport represents the pinnacle of premium sports retail in Italy, and this partnership is the next phase of that journey. I look forward to working with Emanuele, Giovanni, Ester, Giulia and their team, bringing our international experience and strong brand relationships together with their regional expertise to grow Maxi Sport’s unique offering and also launch Sports Direct in Italy in the future.”
The deal follows Frasers Group’s recent acquisitions in Central Europe.
In November last year, the company agreed to acquire Hervis Hungary and Hervis Romania from SPAR Austria Group. These transactions will add more than 75 outlets to Frasers Group’s portfolio in the region.
In October last year, Frasers Group acquired a majority holding in The Webster, a Miami-based luxury retailer, as part of its efforts to broaden its international luxury retail presence and develop digital capability.
