ISO/UNDP 53001 is the first standard of its kind to offer a globally recognised framework for embedding the SDGs within corporate strategy, governance and day-to-day operations.
According to ISO and the UNDP, the standard responds to growing expectations for measurable and transparent action on sustainable development from governments, companies, and institutions worldwide.
ISO/UNDP 53001 provides organisations with tools to identify sustainability priorities, set objectives, integrate these into existing processes, and monitor performance. As a requirements-based system, it allows organisations to demonstrate that their efforts meet defined standards, ISO stated.
The standard is designed to enhance accountability and foster confidence among stakeholders regarding sustainability commitments.
The framework is intended for businesses, governments, educational institutions, civil society organisations and other bodies. Users can focus on the SDGs most relevant to their purpose, operating context and stakeholders.
It is designed to work alongside existing management system standards, including ISO 9001 for quality management and ISO 14001 for environmental management.
The organisations said this could help reduce duplicated processes and support a more consistent approach to managing risks and commitments.
The launch comes as public development funding faces pressure while sustainable development requirements continue to exceed the resources available from public finance alone.
ISO and UNDP said the standard is intended to give businesses and private investors a common method for translating sustainability commitments into measurable action.
ISO secretary-general Sergio Mujica explained: “The SDGs have provided a shared global vision for a decade. Today, organizations are looking for concrete ways to translate that vision into action.
“International Standards have long helped organisations address complex global challenges by providing a common language and a shared framework for action. We are delighted to launch ISO/UNDP 53001 today, extending this proven approach to the SDGs and helping organisations create positive impact for people and planet.”
UNDP selected ISO as its international standards development partner for the initiative, combining the UN agency’s sustainable development expertise with ISO’s standardisation system and national standards body network.
UN assistant secretary-general and UNDP’s Bureau for Policy and Programme Support director Marcos Neto added: “The SDGs provide a shared blueprint for a more inclusive and prosperous future. Achieving that requires organizations everywhere to turn ambition into action.
“We are proud to launch ISO/UNDP 53001 alongside ISO as a crucial tool to help organizations embed the SDGs into the way they operate, lead and govern. By making sustainability part of everyday decision-making, the standard can help accelerate progress towards the 2030 Agenda.”
Danish Standards led the technical committee responsible for developing the standard. Its chief executive, Jens Heiede, said the work involved experts from different sectors and regions.
“Creating a standard that could be applied by organizations of every size, sector and geography required extensive collaboration between experts from around the world. Together, we developed a practical and internationally agreed set of requirements that organizations can apply with confidence,” Heiede said.
ISO/UNDP 53001 is intended to remain relevant to the current SDGs and any global goals that replace the 2030 Agenda. Like other ISO International Standards, it will undergo regular systematic review.
ISO and UNDP also plan to work with partners across the multilateral system on implementation support, including sector-specific guidance for different industries and markets.
The standard’s launch forms part of the ISO Annual Meeting, hosted by AFNOR in Paris from 28 September to 2 October 2026.
