US Customs, Altana partner on AI-powered product passports

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is working with supply chain technology firm Altana to trial AI-powered Product Passports in a bid to enhance enforcement efficiency and accelerate customs clearance for trusted traders.

This partnership, facilitated through CBP’s Global Business Identifier (GBI) Programme, enables companies to securely track their products' supply chains from the raw materials to the final product and share this information with CBP before manufacturing or arrival at the US border.

Once validated, future shipments can use the Product Passport ID in customs filings, streamlining clearance in a way comparable to the “Global Entry” programme for individuals. CBP said the approach enables more efficient border processing while allowing officers to focus enforcement on higher-risk shipments.

"Altana is proud to pioneer a system that meets the demands of the new trade environment,” said Altana CEO and co-founder, Evan Smith. “A recent wave of regulations and tariffs now requires CBP to enforce US laws across entire global supply chains -tracking goods all the way back to the raw materials. With Altana Product Passports, importers can now map and follow their supply chains, determine their tariffs, and easily demonstrate compliance with CBP.

“The US government benefits by receiving detailed supply chain information before customs filings, and can conduct continuous compliance monitoring of global supply networks with AI.”

CBP noted in a Federal Register notice that the initiative helps companies authenticate supply chain partners, manage risks, and comply with emerging trade mandates.

Altana’s platform is already used by companies including BASF, L.L. Bean and Maersk, which are sharing Product Passports as part of the network. The partnership is also open to further participants, including importers of record and licensed customs brokers.

The move is expected to yield cost savings for businesses and US taxpayers, while bolstering national security with greater transparency across global supply chains.
