  • Indonesian textile exporters have urged their government to lobby the US administration to extend the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) facility, which expired last month. Indonesian Textile Association (API) chairman Ade Sudrajat said the tariff reduction is still needed because it allowed local textile products to gain a strong foothold in the US and without it, exports to its biggest market may fall sharply. THE JAKARTA POST
  • Vietnam National Textile and Garment Group (Vinatex) is to invest VND205bn (US$9.7m) in a garment factory in Bong Son Industrial Zone in the district of Hoai Nhon, Binh Dinh province. The factory, which will produce suits and trousers, is expected to be completed by February. The facility will house 51 sewing lines and employ 3,2000 people. VINATEX
  • Cambodian garment exports grew 19.5% to US$2.51bn during the first six months of the year, from $2.1bn in the same period last year. Garment exports to the US were valued at $1.02bn, up 10% on the prior year, while exports to European nations jumped 27% to $862m. Exports to other countries also rose 27% to $629m during the period.   • Two new textile factories being built in the Cuanza Norte Province in Angola are expected to create 2,000 direct new jobs. One will be used to make fabrics and the other for clothing, according to Francisco Diogo, the municipal administrator of Cambambe. The old structures have been demolished and work on the two new-builds will last for two years. ANGOP
  • Men’s wear business Aoyama Trading Co is to build an apparel factory in Indonesia by spring, with plans to produce 140,000 suits in the first year of operation. The plant, which will be the company’s first directly operated facility outside of China, is part of efforts to shift production from the country where labour costs are rising. It will be set up by apparel manufacturer Fukuryo. NIKKEI
