  • Pakistan’s Textile Ministry is to enhance the capacity building of cotton fibre testing laboratories in Sindh and Punjab. Around five established modern and start-of-the-art cotton fibre testing laboratories were set up around 2007-2009. Representatives of the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association, Karachi Cotton Association and exporters, however, were of the view that Ministry had remained silent in doing any good with the facilities.   • Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) should further clarify weaknesses and bottlenecks in the current development of industries in order to have a better plan on industrial restructuring, a number of insiders have said. Le Tien Truong, General Director of the Vietnam National Textile and Garment Group, says much of the data on the industry in the draft is incorrect such as labour productivity, added value and imports. Therefore, he says the plan’s reliability remains modest and needs overhauling. VIETNAM NET

  • Two weeks since the death of a garment worker at the Taiwanese-owned Accasette Garment factory – a supplier of Dutch chain C&A – in Phnom Penh, the National Social Security Fund is still to pay compenstation. The employee, Khat Samerl, died on 31 May from what the Labour Ministry concluded was a case of cardiac arrest. News of her death allegedly caused more than 20 other workers to faint at the factory. According to the Labour Law, the NSSF is obliged to give a $1,000 payout as funeral allowance in the case of work injuries leading to death. PHNOM PEN POST

  • The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) has decided to keep all of its mills shut next week in protest at the government not providing the incentives that were promised to the industrialists. APTMA says Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is not fulfilling the promise to pay funds worth Rs180bn, and that Finance Minister Ishaq Dar has allocated only Rs4bn in the budget for fiscal year 2017-18. The organisation says the industrialists are being asked to increase exports without being provided with incentives. THE NATION

  • A new package for the knitwear sector of India is to be announced in the next two months, according to what local news reports have called a “top official”. The package is expected to provide a level-playing field to the knitwear industry, which is facing tough competition from countries like China  due to a lack of automation and technology upgrades.
